Renting tips

How to read a rental contract before the photos win you over

Furnished apartment living room

Monthly rent looks flexible, but gets expensive if the deposit is high or electricity sits outside the price. Read the clauses before the photos.

Great photos rent a flat in seconds, but the contract is what you live with for a year. Before you get excited about the furniture and lighting, read the clauses that decide what you really pay each month.

Ask about everything outside the rent

  • Electricity and water: on the landlord or on you?
  • Internet: included, or a new subscription?
  • Maintenance: who fixes the AC and plumbing?
  • Parking: included or rented separately?

Move-in day

Photograph the meters, walls and floors on move-in day and send them in a dated message to the landlord or office. Without photos, getting your deposit back is hard. Agree the notice period in writing.

Pick the area for what you need

Salmiya for services, Farwaniya for a balance of price and commute, Jahra if you accept a longer drive for more space. Don't compare two prices as if they were the same product.

Warning signs

A listing with no block or street, and a request to transfer money before viewing. Prefer listings that state the block, floor and size.
